William A. Newell

August 22, 1921 ~ May 11, 2015 (age 93) 93 Years Old

William A. (Bill) Newell, age 93, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 11, 2015, in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Bill was a native of Staten Island, NY, and retired from the New York City Police Department after 22 years of service. He, also, retired from the US Government as an Aircraft Mechanic at New Cumberland Army Depot. A veteran of World War II with military honors, Bill served with the Combat Engineers in Europe and participated in the Normandy, France “D-Day Invasion” and the “Battle of the Bulge” in Belgium.

“Bucksy’s” fondest memory of growing up on Staten Island, NY, was the opportunity to play “sand-lot baseball” with and against so many great baseball players. A real highlight of his baseball career was the good fortune to play with Bobby Thomson, “The Staten Island Scot,” of New York Giants fame at Curtis High School. Bill, also, told family and friends what a thrill it was for him, at the age of sixteen, to play for the American Legion State Championship in Cooperstown, NY. His team, the Staats Post, was the first local team to play in Cooperstown!

A longtime resident of Hershey and Palmyra, PA, Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Irene. He was a devoted father to four children: Susan Paciolla of Ambler, PA; Bill Newell of Harrisburg, PA; Carol Andersen of Buckeye, AZ; and Linda MacCallum of Cape Coral, FL; as well as, a loving grandfather to 9 grandchildren: Tiffany, Matthew, Thomas, John-Brandon, Michael, Tyler, Ian, Ryan, and Eddie.

Bill left a legacy of strong family values and a love of travel and beauty in the world. His family will honor him at a private memorial and celebration of life at his favorite beaches.
