Mildred F. (Fletcher) McClellan of Palmyra passed away on Friday, June 2, 2017. Born to the late Joseph C. and E. W. Fletcher on November 17, 1919 in Paragould, Arkansas, she was one of five children. She was a 1939 graduate of Greene County High School in northeast Arkansas and attended Arkansas State College and Shippensburg State Teachers College.

At Arkansas State Mildred met and later married a fellow student, Emmert F. McClellan (1921-78) of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. They had two sons, Jackie F. McClellan (1944-48) and E. Fletcher McClellan, currently of Palmyra. She is survived by Fletcher, his wife Jane Meyer, and two grandchildren, Nathan and Kathryn McClellan.

Mildred was a school teacher and basketball coach for a brief time, but spent most of her working life in food service. The McClellans owned and operated several restaurants in south central Pennsylvania during the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, including Mountain Lake Inn in Fannettsburg, The Sugar Bowl in Shippensburg, and The Ranch restaurants in Shippensburg and Chambersburg.  In the 1970s they entered the college food service industry, serving as managers for Saga Corporation at East Tennessee State University and The University of the South.

Following her husband’s passing, Mildred was a food service manager for Marriott at David Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. For her outstanding work in food production and in the development and promotion of aspiring food service directors, she was nominated at the age of 70 by her Lipscomb superiors for the J. Willard Marriott Award of Excellence.

After retiring in 1992, Mildred lived in Nashville until 2009 and then moved to Palmyra to be closer to her family.  She enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s soccer and basketball games at Palmyra High School, going to the movies, hair appointments, and baking.  She was renowned for the thousands of pies and trays of sticky buns she made for business and the family.
